Parayil Tharakan Family
Olavipe is the ancestral home of the Parayil Tharakan clan, a very large Syrian Christian family. The building dates back over 100 years, with innumerable interesting stories available from your hosts during your stay!
Antony Tharakan is a post-graduate of history from Bombay University, starting his career as a para-military officer with the Government of India. He moved to the Dignitary Protection Unit and worked mostly in New Delhi. He then moved into the private sector, returning to Kerala in 2000 to spend time farming on the ancestral property. Besides running a homestay with his wife Rema, he also conducts out-bound training programmes for corporate executives.
Rema Tharakan is a post-graduate in Broadcast Arts from Delhi. She has worked with All India Radio in Delhi since 1988. She now does freelance work with the media, and is the English news presenter with Jeevan TV, one of Kerala's leading news and entertainment channels.
They now devote most of their time to Olavipe, showing a dedication and passion for the local community and villagers now reliant on the homestay for their livelihood. The character of the building is only enhanced when you are greeted by Antony and Rema - and straight away you are made to feel like you are one of the family.
