In 1996 G.S Gul Muhammed the man who strived for the economic upliftment of a whole village experimented with cultivation of the wild "GREEN MUSSEL" on 'Coir' with the technical assistance provided by a team of experts of the Government run organisation named "CMFRI" based at Cochin. It was indeed a great success. Significantly, while Spain, the pioneer in Green Mussel farming takes two year for a single corp, Gul could get a crop in 75 days !!! After this huge success Gul decided to share his secret with the locals. He trained them with live demonstrations, showed them the benefit of forming cooperatives, provided financial assistance through various government channels, helped and guided them in marketing. The success story still continues. The success of the Man behind a thousand smiles can be listed as given below - In 1996 Gul was the lone farmer and now it is a society of 3500 out of which 2400 are women. - In 1996 the production was 2 Metric tons while now it is 7000 metric tons. - In 1996 Gul had to export his harvest now it's being wholly consumed by the local market in Kerala !!!.. - At present there are One hundred and fifty self help group of women ( KUDUMBA SHREE) comprising twenty to twenty five women of each group, All these self help group were under control of One Apex Society named "GREEN MUSSEL FARMER SOCIETY PADANNA"
